People who read custom food labels tend to choose foods with fewer calories, less saturated fat, sodium, cholesterol, and sugars. Or, in other words, people who read these labels have healthier diets than those who don’t pay any attention to this information, and a new study proves this statement.

Researchers analyzing data from a 2005-06 U.S. National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, found that nearly 62% of respondents said they read the nutrition facts labels before making a food purchase. Further, nearly 52% examine the list of ingredients, 47% pay attention to the serving size and nearly 44% review health claims at least some of the time when deciding which food product to purchase.

There were significant health differences between food label readers and non-readers. Researchers of the study stated that people who took the time to read the food labels had dramatic increases in their intake of total calories, total fat, saturated fat, cholesterol, sodium, and dietary fibers / sugars.

“If the food label is to have a greater public health impact, rates of use will likely need to be increased among U.S. adults,” said study author Nicholas J. Ollberding, a professor in the Department of Health and Behavior Studies, Teachers College, at Columbia University.

“Low rates of label use also suggest that food labels may need to be modified,” Ollberding added. Suggested changes to the current label could include bolding calorie information, reporting the total nutrient intake for foods likely to be consumed in a single sitting, and using more intuitive labeling techniques such as the use of red, yellow and green inks on the label itself.

So, what does all this mean to those of us in the label industry or our customers – actual purchasers of food product labels? Nothing specific just yet. There are no mandated changes for requirements on food / nutrition labels at this specific time. But, they may be coming at some point down the road. We will do our best to keep you posted as to changes in FDA requirements. In the mean time, however, please feel free to visit the food labels page of our site for a listing of products we offer and more information.

And, if you’d like even more info on this subject, please visit the FDA’s website…

Labels are not simply tags used to identify items, materials, or products. Labels and stickers are used as an effective means for promotion, identification, tracking, warning, awareness, mailing, safety, and much, much more!

Of the more common commercial uses, labels are used to promote public figures (campaign bumper stickers, for example) and to sell product. The labeling or packaging of a product can and does serve to help items “stand out” from other, similar items and lead consumers to purchase one product over the other. Imagine grocery shopping. What makes you choose one item on the shelf over another? More often than not, it is the label on the product that influences your decision.

Labels today are manufactured in a multitude of ways and looks. There are literally dozens of choices for the label stock and finish. Everything from plain white and fluorescent colors to glossy and hologram stocks and films are used to impact the look-and-feel of the final printed label. There are even domed labels to add extract pizzazz to certain jobs. And, for many label products, you can choose from additional features such as: Aqueous coating; UV inks / finishes; Indoor / outdoor materials; Tamper-resistant or tamper-evident stocks; Permanent / semi-permanent / or removable adhesives; and even more.

Labels are used in both business and personal matters on a daily basis. Take the obvious use of labels for sending packages, letters, and other mail to clients, friends, and family for instance. Even this most basic use of a label has dozens, if not hundreds, of options. From simple return address labels and basic “to / from” labels – to complex integrated shipping label / form combinations – mailing labels are a common staple in today’s modern environment.

So, what are labels really used for? To make a long story short, labels are used for just about any / every purpose imaginable – both in the business world and in your home. Labels help businesses keep track of inventory or possessions, promote products, announce new features, and keep workers safe from hazards. In our personal lives, labels help us choose the food we eat, the products we buy, and also direct us on how and when to use certain many of the items in our homes.

Asset tags are used to both identify and keep track of personal and business property. Applying asset tags to your possessions is a simple, yet highly effective means of preserving your valuables.

Asset tags are used on a variety of products and a vast array of situations, including indoor / outdoor, cold / warm temperatures, and much more. Below is a listing of the top five uses we’ve seen for our asset tags over the past several years…

Theft Prevention
Products and equipment that are clearly marked and identifiable are much less likely to be stolen.

Equipment Tracking
Asset tags are commonly used by businesses to keep track of tools, equipment, and electronics. Additionally, most banks now require you to show proof of business assets when applying for loans. Using asset tags, with an accompanying database, provides quick and easy proof of your company’s valuable equipment, computers, or other assets.

Lost / Stolen Item Recovery
Lost or stolen items marked with asset tags can be easily identified and returned to the rightful owner. (Imagine leaving your cell phone or laptop at the airport. If it were labeled with an asset tag, airport personnel could easily identify the owner and return it to you.)

Insurance Records
In the unfortunate event of loss or theft of an item – or even worse a fire or natural disaster striking your business – your item’s serial number, description, and other information will be readily available for insurance reimbursement purposes.

Visual Reminders
Asset tags help to remind you of upcoming service contracts, expiring lease / maintenance agreements, and more.

Asset tags can be configured in a multitude of different ways and are commonly manufactured on quality, long-lasting materials like aluminum, stainless steel, metalized polyester, Mylar, and even tamper-resistant stocks. Asset tags can be formatted with bar codes, numbers, lettering, or even your company logo.

So, what can asset tags do for your business? Visit our Asset Tags page for even more information and additional examples of asset tag usage!

While searching the Internet recently, I came across an article from one of our happy customers. It was an inspiring story, so I wanted to share it here on our company blog. Here goes…

Has this ever happened to you… You’re on the golf course after playing a few holes, digging through your bag for your 9 Iron – but you can’t find it? Or, have you gotten home after a great day of golf and, after getting your clubs out to clean them, you realize that you left your putter on the 18th hole?

Well, I have to admit it has happened to me on more than one occasion. Most of those times, another golfer had turned the lost club in to the clubhouse and I was able to retrieve it with no problems. However, there were a few instances that the missing club simply disappeared. (My guess is that someone found the club, and with no way to determine the owner, simply kept it for himself or herself.)

After several lost putters, sand wedges, and drivers – I decided it was time to do something about my problem. So, I searched the Internet for golf club identification. And, that’s when I found MaverickLabel.Com’s Golf Club & Sports ID Labels web site. They have a really simple ordering process which allows you to create your own identification label right there on their site. You simply type-in your name and phone number and you’re literally done in less than two minutes. The labels look fantastic and they don’t stand out like a sore thumb on your golf clubs. And, to top off the deal, MaverickLabel.Com offers free shipping on this product!

I had been thinking of purchasing an expensive set of Ping golf clubs, but was very reluctant due to my carelessness. But, with my new ID labels in hand – I went ahead and bought the new Ping clubs for an upcoming business trip to Florida. I put the great looking labels on each of my clubs with confidence and took them with me to Orlando the next week.

I loved the new clubs and was having a great round of golf with my new business associates. Everything was going great until I got to the 11th hole. I was about 75 yards from the green, in a bit of rough grass. So, I began digging through my bag to find my pitching wedge. And, to no real surprise… It was not in my bag! I couldn’t believe it. I had left the club at another hole – again! I finished the hole with my 9 Iron and we then went back a few holes, asking the golfers behind us if they had seen my club. But, unfortunately for me, none of them had.

To make a long story short, we finished the round without my pitching wedge and waited at the clubhouse for a couple of hours to see if anyone had found the club with no luck. I continued to call the golf course for a few days after my trip, but it was never turned in.

This might be the end of this story, but then, about two weeks later… The course manager called my cell phone to let me know that their grounds keeper had found my club in a tall patch of grass on the 4th hole! He mailed my club back to me and I had it safely back in my bag two days later. And, it was all thanks to the ID label I had put on each of my new clubs. Needless to say, I’m very glad I made that purchase from MaverickLabel.Com.

This is exactly why we also offer IDMyStuff Labels and related items like our Asset Tags. So, take it from Kevin and be sure to label all your personal and company property. If it doesn’t have label on it, there is no way an honest person can return your lost goods.

It reads “Don’t like my driving? Then quit watching me.”

But you can’t help it. It’s funny and staring you right in the face as you sit at that red light waiting for your evening commute to be over.

Bumper stickers are everywhere from the simple “My child is an honor student” to “My kid beat up your honor student,” from “Clinton finally went to Vietnam” to “Clinton 1996.” Those little rectangular adhesives have been making political, satirical and, often times, off-color remarks for as many years as people have been driving.

However, there is no more effective form of advertising available that is as widespread as well-placed bumper stickers.

Imagine how many miles an average person drives each year. How many cars would that person drive in front of? How many people could that one simple bumper sticker send out your message to?

Bumper sticker advertising guarantees a captive audience for at least a few minutes. With the mind-numbing monotony of the daily commute, there is nothing better than something funny to break that wearing ride to and from work. And with the proper message, those people are highly impressionable – especially for politicians who love captive audiences.

Name recognition is everything in politics. The more times a driver sees a bumper stickers telling him to vote for one particular politician, there’s a likelihood that he may be persuaded that way. Voters need that name recognition to help make their decision.

Bumper stickers can help voters remember since they will likely recall that funny or thought-provoking message by that politician. Even if people don’t know what exactly a candidate stands for, well-placed advertising and name recognition can go a long way at the polls.

And there is no more cost effective way to ensure that name recognition than through bumper sticker advertising. After all, who doesn’t read bumper stickers – whether in traffic or in a parking lot? And if it is a funny bumper sticker, all the better.

With bumper stickers, the expense is minimal and long lasting versus print, radio, television or Internet media where the audience can choose to change from captive to distracted elsewhere.

Politicians use demographics to their advantage, hitting those areas hard where they believe their voters will be. But what about those swing votes or those voters who just aren’t sure? What about those voters who aren’t in the politician’s demographic? How are they going to get the message?

Unlike a television or radio spot that only hits certain demographics, a bumper sticker has a much better chance of hitting more people from more demographics than any other type of advertising. Unlike print or Internet media, bumper sticker advertising doesn’t require a voter or client to pick up a paper or click on a certain link to get your message across.

The key to any good advertising campaign is a captive audience – one that won’t click away from the television or radio station or from the Web site. With bumper sticker advertising, drivers are that captive audience.

Not only does the politician get her name recognition, but also the advertising is much more cost-effective and more widespread. After all who can resist reading a bumper sticker?
